Today’s Sermon Outline and Bulletin

Front Cover – 1 Samuel 3:9 : GOD calls to those whose hearts are open

Then Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy.

9 So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

Inside Cover – Colossians 3:1-4, 16

3 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your[a] life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.

Worship through Praise – Songs for this Service

How Great thou Art

I Have Decided to Follow Jesus

Turn Your Eyes upon Jesus

Call to Worship : Psalm 96

Psalm 96
Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth.
2 Sing to the Lord, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day.
Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

4 For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods.
For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the Lord made the heavens.
6 Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and glory are in his sanctuary.

Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
8 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come into his courts.
Worship the Lord in the splendor of his[a] holiness; tremble before him, all the earth.
10 Say among the nations,

“The Lord reigns.” The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved; he will judge the peoples with equity.

11 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it.
12 Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.

13 Let all creation rejoice before the Lord, for he comes, he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness and the peoples in his faithfulness.

Todays Sermon Passage Luke 18:18-23

The Triumphs of Trusting: Seeking only the Best

The Rich and the Kingdom of God

18 A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

19 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’[a]”

21 “All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.

22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

23 When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy.

Opening Remarks:

Receiving eternal life is by following Jesus and forsaking anything else that hinders that. You need to be aware and expose the deadliness of idolatry in our lives. Are we seeking God or Idols in our Lives?

1. The Urgent Concern  (v18-21)

18 A certain ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

Jesus in setting the stage. The ruler is seeking Jesus approval in his life.

God demand total Righteousness.  (19-20). As human beings we can-not meet this standard.

2. The Right Diagnosis  (v 22-23)

21 “All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.

The rulers heart was inward on himself not toward God. What have I not done to meet God’s standards. Somewhat contrite, arrogant.

1st Commandment – God says “You will have no other God before Me”

In the rulers life God was not first.

3. The Proper Treatment  (v 22)

22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

[-] We need God’s mercy

[-] Acknowledge God each and every day

[-] It is impossible to be righteous without God

[-] Forsake all else and follow God

O Come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker.
